NodeProcessException: Failed to retrieve existing object

I am setting up a forgerock cluster in GKE(1.27.4-gke.900). I am using forgeops(7.3.0) and fr-reactjs-sampleapp to validate the Oauth2 authorization code flow setup.

For the basic username/password login flow, the following POST call from SPA is failing with 401 error code.

I can’t find any relevant articles regards to the error in the forum and all I could tell is there is something wrong with “Increment Login Count” node in the flow. Based on the error stack trace, the login failure was caused by “Failed to retrieve existing object”. Could some explain what this error means and how to troubleshoot it?

Hi @jiyun_kang,

In order for the Login Count node to evaluate the user’s profile, it needs a valid identity attribute to search for it. Are you using a different attribute than the username to retrieve the user’s identity? If not, insert an “Identify Existing User” node after the username and password collectors. Or just change the authentication attribute in the identity store configuration: ForgeRock Directory Services :: AM 7.3.0 (however careful, this is a global configuration that impacts all trees).

The system returns the same login failure error even if I switch my decision node(‘Data Store Decision’ or ‘inner tree evaluator’) to ‘Identify Existing User’. I am using ‘username’ as an identity attribute. Alias Search Attribute Name is configured to ‘uid’.

I see inconsistent login behavior from the settings describe in the following link(Login with self-service :: ForgeRock Identity Platform). Interestingly, the user shows authenticated when I browse to the admin UI(/platform or /admin) while login fails in the SPA login-central and I haven’t got any successful login in any other pages.

It starts working fine when I remove all the decision nodes and make it to a simple workflow as the attached image.

The root cause is the following:

at org.forgerock.openam.auth.nodes.LoginCountDecisionNode.lambda$process$2(LoginCountDecisionNode.java:131)

This means that the node failed to retrieve the user object from IDM. Initially I thought it was because the tree was not using the username to authenticate the user. However, you confirmed that you’re using the username for authentication. There are two possibilities here:

  • The identity store does not have the proper settings. Please verify that in the User Configuration tab, LDAP Users Search Attribute is set to fr-idm-uuid, and in Authentication Configuration, check that Authentication Naming Attribute is uuid.
  • The platform fails to communicate with IDM, or IDM is not deployed correctly - which you’ll have to investigate. I suggest you look into IDM logs to investigate the Login Node interaction with IDM - as it should indeed communicate with IDM to retrieve the user’s object.
